AUGUST KEY POINTS
SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS
- Trend estimates: Short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during August 2008 (465,600 movements), fell by 0.5% compared with July 2008 (467,800 movements). This followed monthly decreases of 0.2% for June 2008 and 0.4% for July 2008.
- Currently, trend estimates for arrivals are 0.8% lower than in August 2007.
- Seasonally adjusted estimates: During August 2008, arrivals (458,600 movements) decreased by 8.4% compared with July 2008 (500,500 movements). This followed a monthly decrease of 2.7% for June 2008 and a monthly increase of 7.8% for July 2008 (associated with World Youth Day).
- Original estimates: There were 420,200 arrivals to Australia in August 2008.
SHORT-TERM RESIDENT DEPARTURES
- Trend estimates: Short-term resident departures from Australia during August 2008 (489,600 movements), recorded a 0.3% increase compared with July 2008 (488,000 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.4% each for June 2008 and July 2008.
- Currently, trend estimates for departures are 6.0% higher than in August 2007.
- Seasonally adjusted estimates: During August 2008, departures (495,600 movements) increased by 2.5% compared with July 2008 (483,300 movements). This followed a monthly decrease of 3.8% for June 2008 and a monthly increase of 1.5% for July 2008.
- Original estimates: There were 485,400 departures from Australia during August 2008.
